Ladakh Tourism
Ladakh is a union territory in the Kashmir region of India. Formerly a part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh was administered as a Union Territory on 31 October 2019. Stretching from the Siachen Glacier to the great Himalayas, Ladakh is a land unlike any other. Ladakh is known as the coldest desert in the world with stunning landscapes.
Impressive gompas (Tibetan Buddhist monasteries), flying prayer flags, white stupas, Ladakh with its intricate murals and a group of red-robed monks. It is said that it is only in Ladakh that a person sitting in the shade with his feet in the sun can suffer from heat stroke and frostbite at the same time. With a Tibetan-like culture, the people of Ladakh are friendly and welcoming to tourists.
Ladakh is an adventure park for rafting and high altitude trekking. Note that Leh Ladakh is not accessible by road outside the summer months. The route is fully operational from October to May and the only way to reach there is by air. The Chadar trek along the frozen Sanskar River is undertaken from late January to February.
For those of us who are constantly confused about the difference between Leh-Ladakh, here is something that might help you. Ladakh is divided into two districts: Leh District and Kargil District. The above district has a famous town called "Leh" and is a great tourist destination as the nearby beautiful monasteries, Shanti stupas, cafes and Leh market define the culture of the place.
Things to know before visiting Leh Ladakh
From August 2021, Indian citizens will no longer require an Inside Line Permit to travel to the Inside Line areas of Ladakh.
However, tourists visiting Ladakh will still have to pay a green fee or environment fee of Rs 300 and Rs 100 to the Red Cross Fund. This fee can be paid online or through your hotel or travel agent.
Travelers from countries other than India are still required to obtain a Protected Area Permit (PAP) or a Restricted Area Permit (RAP).
Government authorities launched a web portal http://lahdclehpermit.in/ on June 1, 2017, to make it easier for travelers to obtain permits.
